The historic Gifford Park neighborhood hosts one of the city’s most unique community events: Porchfest.

For those unfamiliar, it is a free annual music festival in which you walk from porch to porch (or front yards or stages) throughout the neighborhood. In addition to music, there’s art, poetry, open mic, and comedy.

The event is sponsored by California Bar and the Gifford Park Neighborhood Association. Performers over the years have included Matt Cox, The Prairie Gators, Kris Lager, and Josh Hoyer. The longstanding bar is open during the event, and its patio sits adjacent to one of the performance areas. You’ll also find a variety of food trucks and drink options.

While one of my favorite summer events, Porchfest is not unique to Omaha. The event originated in Ithaca, New York in 2007 after Gretchen Hildreth heard Lesley Greene’s husband playing the ukulele on his front steps. The two bonded over their love of music and thought, hey, this is cool, let’s do this throughout the neighborhood. Since then, the event has spread to more than 200 cities in the United States and Canada.

The event has proved successful for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it’s free and open to everyone. It continues to thrive as a community-building event where neighbors and music lovers connect.

Enter Emily Cox. After attending a Porchfest in Lincoln, she organized the inaugural event in Omaha in 2017 alongside Benjamin Baldwin. They coordinated with the Gifford Park Neighborhood Association and Gifford Park Neighborhood Market.

Maybe not an Omaha original, but I’ve found Porchfest to be a laid-back, community-centric event in one of the city’s most unique and greenest neighborhoods. It’s also the place to listen to some of the city’s best local musicians.
