More than a year after it was announced, Big Grove Brewery has opened in the Catalyst building in the Edge District. The Catalyst sits on the former site of Omaha Steel, west of Saddle Creek and south of Farnam. I had a chance to check out the Catalyst during Open Omaha. The building was largely gutted and rebuilt and now includes offices and co-working space as well as a coffee shop, which is also operated by Big Grove.

While the wait was long, we were seated on its huge outdoor patio. This place is equipped with lots of tables and overhead heaters for those chilly nights. It has an equally large indoor seating area where you can watch the game, shop in its gift shop, and peer into its in-house brewing operation.

The beer at Big Grove included a Mango Wheat, Marzen, Stout, and a Hazy IPA, among others. Some of its offerings will be exclusive to Omaha. Food options included starters, salads, burgers, noodles, a few entrees, and a kids menu. We found the food, including burger, focaccia bread, wings, and beers, to be very well executed.

Parking was a challenge during my visit in part due to this city’s love for new restaurants. While the 750-space parking garage next door helps alleviate the situation, it wasn’t open for my first visit. Instead, I parked in Dundee along 48th Street and took the stairs down to the parking lot.

Big Grove was founded in 2013 as a small craft brewery in Solon, Iowa, with a mission to become an integral part of its community. They expanded to Iowa City, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and now Omaha. The brewery has established the “Big Grove for Good” Foundation to support community initiatives.

Its large patio, tucked between Dundee, which sits above it, and the developing Edge District that surrounds it, is an ideal spot for both warm summer nights and cool fall evenings, with its abundance of firepits. It will become a go-to warm weather hangout for us.

Big Grove may not be local, but it brews its beer onsite. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better combination of great beer, food, and patio space.

Big Grove is located at 4601 Catalyst Court. Its taproom is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The kitchen closes an hour earlier. In a departure from standard practice in Omaha, the Edge District has parking meters both along the street and in the garage.
