Recently listed for sale, this Victorian Revival-style house just east of Field Club at 3017 Pacific Street always catches my eye when I walk by it. It was designed by architect F.C. Ledebrink and built in 1892 as a model home and residence for real estate developer and builder George N. Hicks.

Outside the bright blue house has frilled columns and crowns framing the front with a steeply pitched roof with cornices and a dormer. It also features an arched second-story balcony that is accented by a diamond-paned windows above.

When it was the built, the inside of the 3,800 sq ft home there was a grand foyer, parlour and office, ornate woodwork with original built-in China cabinets and bookcases, leaded glass, large bay windows, molded trim and doors that were hand built on-site. It also had an oak staircase with an intricate lattice that led to the second floor with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. Like many residences of the well-off, it included servant’s quarters and staircase.

Born in New York in 1857, George moved to Omaha in 1878 and became one of the city’s most successful real estate men. He was largely responsible for developing the Hanscom Park neighborhood. He moved out of the house before passing away in 1915.

While the house retains many of its original features, a renovation in the early 2000’s restored the original floor plan and made it more period appropriate. It was restored again in 2016 and its woodwork stained black. The house has changed hands a few times in recent years including selling for $118,000 in 2010, $132,000 in 2016, $320,000 in 2022. It is currently listed for $549,000.

With its landmark status approved in 1981, major renovations cannot take place without a special permit. It was previously used as an airbnb targeting towards travelling nurses, doctors, professionals, tourists and staycationers.
