A joint project between the State of Nebraska and the City of Omaha will demolish the bridge that runs from east to west along L Street at the 72nd Street intersection.

The plan is to replace it with a street-level intersection that will include dual left-turn lanes and single right-turn lanes. In addition, 72nd Street north of L Street will be widened to six lanes.

The intersection with the bridge was built in 1964, when L Street was a major artery and carried lots of truck traffic to and from the stockyards. Since the stockyards closed, the intersection has deteriorated and crash rates remained higher than other interchanges in the area.

The project could start as soon as this fall and finish in 2027.
