On the SE corner of 27th and Leavenworth, a four story, 194 unit apartment will be constructed. The block on which the apartment will be built has been nearly empty and underutilized for decades. The two historic structures that currently sit on the block look like they will be the retained. The first is the 810 S 26th St built in 1900. The other is 818 S 26th St built in 1925. A house built in 1890 at 2608 Marcy Street would be razed.

Undated Durham Museum photo looking north from 27th and Leavenworth. This lot is doesn’t appear but this gives an idea of how the area used to look. St. Peter Catholic Church is on the left.

The building will have a partially submerged parking garage with 127 stalls and 24 stalls on an existing parking lot and on-street parking. Amenities include fitness center, business center, resident lounge, game room, community kitchen, bike storage and a courtyard with pool and hot tub.

The pic below shows how the block looks today from 27th and Leavenworth and from 26th and Marcy.

The apartment complex will add density to the midtown area as the city aims to add 30,000 residents and 30,000 jobs to the urban core over the next 30 years.

Former site of Alamito Dairy. When I was a kid we had their milk delivered to our house. I can still see the galvanized milk box marked with the company logo sitting outside next to the door.
