My first stop during Open Omaha was the Dizzy Mule. The second was the Med Center’s Catalyst building. Located on the former Omaha Steel site at 46th and Farnam Streets, it is part of the larger developing Edge District which is designed as a hub of innovation and invention.

The first completed project of the new district, Catalyst brings together entrepreneurs, investors and businesses related to the healthcare community. It is intended to encourage and expedite startups with goal of keeping billions of dollars locally rather than having it leave the state. Joining Catalyst in the Edge District will be a research lab and parking garage connected with bridges and sky walks to the main Med Center campus on the other side of Saddle Creek Road.

While I appreciate the important work that the Med Center is doing, I don’t work in healthcare. Outside of repurposing an old midtown site, my primary draw is the co-working spaces, coffee shop and brewery both operated by Big Grove Brewery in addition to its massive outdoor patio.

For those that are unfamiliar with Omaha Steel, the company maintained a presence in midtown for more than 100 years. Founded in 1906, it continued to operate from this located until 2014. The Med Center purchased the property in 2019 and started work on Catalyst and the larger Edge District in 2023.

My final visit during Open Omaha was Omaha’s first high school – Central at 20th and Dodge Streets. I will cover that in a more in-depth post in the future. In the meantime, if you missed my post on Dizzy Mule, you can find it on my page.
