In April we explored the Mansion at Blackstone. No, not the Storz Mansion but the mansion that faces 39th between Farnam and Dodge Streets. The lot between the mansion and bustling Farnam Steet was purposely vacant from the time it was built in 1912 to allow its owner a clear line of site as the streetcars of his company passed through the area. By the 1970s the former garden was used as a parking lot for Katleman Antiques.

2011 photo of the mansion on the right with the parking lot that once used to be the garden and is now home to Nite Owl. Today it is the home to Little Ricky’s and other businesses.

Let’s fast forward to 2014 when Jay Lund and Matt Dwyer of Greenslate Development purchased the plot in order to build a restaurant. After noticing a lack of late-night food options in the area, Noah Mock and his wife Katie Timperley Mock opened Nite Owl in the new building at 3902 Farnam Street. It was designed as a place where the late night crowd could get a great cocktail and surprisingly good bar food. The menu features burgers, wings, totchos along with vegan and vegetarian options.

A view of Nite Owl from the corner of 39th and Farnam. While it still has a nice green space, the patio and restaurant take up a large amount of space and mostly block the mansion from Farnam.

Inside it has a retro basement vibe with a large, L-shaped sunken bar, dim lighting, jukebox and a projector screen that often plays obscure movies. It also allows for some fantastic people watching from the patio on its east side that is gussied up with a pergola. It’s worth noting that Nite Owl is a fun visit during Halloween and the Holidays when they host festive pop-ups.

The former Kattleman Antique building sitting behind a newer addition added to the front. This is now home to Corkscrew, Greenslate Management and The Nest. Little Ricky’s Rooftop Bar sits above with its patio space.

Perhaps even more impressive is the transformation of the former Katleman Antique warehouse to the west of the former parking lot into space that is now home to The Nest (a companion bar of Nite Owl), Greenslate Management, Corkscrew Wine and Cheese in addition to Little Ricky’s Rooftop Bar which sits behind the others and occupies the second floor.

Looking inside Nite Owl with is retro vibe. Orders are placed at the ends of the bar.

Since its redevelopment more than a decade ago, Blackstone has become one of my favorite areas due to the variety of top-notch bars and restaurants, entertainment options as well as the variety of old and new architecture.
