Leavenworth remains one of my favorite places to explore so this time we head east to a brick building on the northeast corer of 25th Avenue and Leavenworth Streets that is currently home to Emmet’s Tavern.

Located 2514 Leavenworth Street, the building was constructed in 1936 and served as the home to Morris Oberman’s Used Furniture Market for decades. The Russian immigrants started the family business as far back as the early 1920’s. It seems to have operated from 2512 Leavenworth until the newer building was constructed to the west in 1930.  Morris passed away in 1966 at which point his children, Burt and Sylvia, moved the store further south to 4832 S 24th Street and continued to operate it until the early 1980’s.

By 1982 the Pretzel Bar had relocated from its longtime home across the street at 2525 Leavenworth Street. The bar was started by Harry and Gertrude Hansen in 1936. After a 20 year run at its new location, the bar closed and was sold and the building sold to Tony Caniglia in 2004 – the Caniglia family also owned the nearby 11-Worth Cafe. It became Joby C’s Midtown Tavern for a time after that.

Mark McClellan bought it in 2019 at which point he opened Emmet’s Tavern. Named after the town of Emmet, Nebraska where his grandfather operated a bar/barbershop. Mark is a veteran of the bar business getting his start at his father’s bar, Candlelight Lounge. Mark also owns Alderman’s Bar to the west on 33rd and Leavenworth.

The old building at 2514 Leavenworth appears to have bee renovated and restored since 2019 with a garage door-style window that opens to let in the fresh air. Like Candlelight and Alderman’s the walls and ceilings of Emmet’s are covered in memorabilia. The neighborhood bar also has a few entertainment options including a television, pool table, dart board and shuffleboard.
