Leavenworth Street in midtown is no stranger to bars. Among those was Aaron Shapiro’s Bungalow Inn. Located at 33rd Street, it was located in a one-story brick building that was constructed in 1940.

While I don’t have any photos of Bungalow Inn (yet) I do have this amazing 1926 Durham Museum photo of the Old Redick farm home located on the same site.

Morris Shapiro who also operated the Interlude Lounge near 78th and Pacific Streets took over the bar and grill from his father. The bar would later become the American Sportsman Lounge and 33 Club which hired bikini-clad dancers.

More recently it was the home to VFW Post 247 from 1990 until around 2018. While the post remains active, they had to sell the building to get out of debt. This follows a trend of VFWs and American Legions closing across the country in recent years due dwindling membership and increasing debt.

In 2025 it was renovated and reopened as the Meadowlark Lounge. Located across from Alderman’s, the “upscale neighborhood dive bar” will serve specialty cocktails, spirits and a curated wine selection.

  1. Thank you for highlighting the Bungalow Inn. Around 1969, the Bungalow Inn was purchased by Perry Melonis and his wife. Nice people. I tended bar there part-time my last year in college. Not sure how long they retained ownership after I left but I think only for a few years at the most.

The regular patrons at that time tended toward skilled union workers: carpenters, plumbers, electricians, etc. Our most noteworthy regular patron was Howard Shoemaker. Howard was a cartoonist for Playboy magazine from 1959 to 2006. Howard always drove his Porsche to the bar. He would walk in wearing his newsboy cap and leather driving gloves and accompanied by one or two exceptionally attractive women.

One weekend I worked, there was apparently a meeting or convention of Porsche owners from all over the Midwest. Howard brought many of them to the bar. Kept me busy that afternoon.

Thank you for Omaha Exploration !

    1. It’s my pleasure. I love learning about the history behind these buildings. I live near where Howard lived and saw his house when it was on sale a few years ago.
