Located along the Missouri River between Heartland of America Park and the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge is Lewis and Clark Landing – another fun and free stop if you have kids. One of three parks that make up Omaha’s RiverFront, the area is said to have been the landing site of the Lewis and Clark expedition on the western bank of the Missouri River.

The park sits on land formerly owned by Asarco which operated a lead refinery on it for decades before closing in 1997 (the subject of a future post). HDR helped redevelop the site and won an award from the Environment Protection Agency for its remediation work.

After being re-designed, it reopened 2023 with new features including the Discovery Playground. The fully accessible play area was voted fifth in the USA Today 10Best Awards this year. The playground has tall climbing structures, large slides that twist and turn, zipline, water features, music instruments and more.

Along the Missouri River next to the marina is the massive Monument to Labor sculpture by Matthew Placzek, an urban beach, volleyball courts and new pickleball courts that were added in 2025.

The park is home to the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Headquarters and Visitor Center which includes information about the trail, national parks and a gift shop. Perhaps the key attraction is the Kiewit Luminarium, a STEM museum for curious children (it even hosts adults-only nights) and its cafe, Fig. The cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating and is open to the public.

Located along Riverfront Drive, the park is now accessible via the Baby Bob Pedestrian Bridge connector next to CHI Health Center on 10th Street near the baseball stadium. Once inside the park, a walking trail connects to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian bridge to the north while the Martin Luther King Jr Pedestrian bridge connects to the CHI Health Center to the west and another bridge connects to Heartland of America Park with its pier, skating ribbon and in the future the new Children’s Museum on the south.
