Starting in Benson, developers are building more affordable housing options targeting older adults on fixed incomes and first-time home buyers.

The designs for these small homes are the result of the OurStory project which explores scalable solutions to Omaha’s housing affordability crisis. It is a collaboration between architecture students from the University of Nebraska’s FACT (Fabrication and Construction Team), Livable Omaha and Holy Name Housing Corporation.

The two-bedroom Corby House will be 802 sq ft with a price of around $190,000 while the one-bedroom Benson House will be 618 sq ft with a price of around $150,000. Construction will start this summer and the houses are expected to be on the market in the fall.

To make this work, the City of Omaha approved housing on small lots as a means to implement its Housing Affordability Action Plan. The city is working to build 30,000 housing units in the next five years to keep up with demand.
