If you missed it, Omaha’s Children Museum is in the process of building a new first-class building across from Heartland of America Park. Overlooking the Missouri River and located within walking distance of the Kiewit Luminarium, it aims to offer exhibits and programming that brings joy, curiosity and connection for young children and adults alike.

Targeted mostly towards younger children up to eight years old, it will include several exhibition spaces, a 175-seat performance room, cafe and play work-shop. It will feature rubberized mounds rising in the plaza, inviting children to climb and play before going inside. Upon entering, they will continue through the building as “railings and stairs swirl through the indoors, turning circulation routines into recreation.”

The four-story building and public plaza at 8th and Douglas Streets is being designed by Snøhetta, the same architectural firm that designed Omaha’s award-winning addition to Joslyn Art Museum. The cost is being primarily funded by private donations. The museum is expected to open in 2028.
