Omaha’s most famous madam, Anna Wilson, will be the subject of a talk at the Memorial Day program at Prospect Hill Cemetery. You may recall that I wrote about Anna Wilson last August. If you missed it, you can read it here:

Retired journalism professor Dr. Eileen Wirth will discuss Anna’s many contributions to the city. Buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery, she was sometimes referred to as the “queen of the underworld.” She was the keeper of a 25-room brothel at 9th and Douglas Streets and became a successful businesswoman and a benefactor to the Child Saving Institute, Clarkson Hospital, Prospect Hill Cemetery, Omaha Creche among many other. Dr. Wirth chronicled Wilson’s story and several others in “The Women Who Built Omaha: A Bold and Remarkable History.”

The Women Who Built Omaha by Dr. Eileen Wirth.

The Memorial Day program starts at 10:45 AM on Monday, May 26th. It also includes the Preservation Brass & Woodwind Ensemble under the direction of Dave Krecek. The First Nebraska Volunteers – uniformed Civil War re-enactors – will present the colors and later fire their muskets in a three-volley salute to fallen soldiers. Shannon Justice, Vice President of the Prospect Hill Board of Trustees, will act as the Master of Ceremonies and offer updates about the exciting improvements underway at the cemetery which is Omaha’s oldest having been established in 1858.

The book that Josie Washburn had written. Josie worked as a prostitute for a time for Anna Wilson and later opened her own brothel.

Stephen Bouma, Minister of Music at First Congregational Church, will present the invocation and closing benediction. Boy Scout Troop 40 from Dundee Presbyterian Church will assist while Scoutmaster Corey McCallan’s troops raise the flag, lead the Pledge of Allegiance and collect donations to assist with maintenance costs and upkeep of the cemetery.

Following the formal program, Jim Fogarty, will give the traditional eulogy to Anna Wilson at her grave site. In maintaining a tradition dating back to 1912, a yellow rose will be laid on Anna’s grave.

Special thanks to Barbara Naughtin, President of the Board of Trustees for Prospect Hill Cemetery for making me aware of this event.
