The one-story brick building at southwest corner of 10th and Howard Streets looks newer than its counterparts. My research suggests it was built after a fire destroyed the original two-story building in 1938.

Early tenants of the previous structure which included at least four storefronts included numerous cigar stores, barbershops, bars, restaurants second-hand stores and most notably Philips Department Store owned by Philip Greenberg and his sons, Henry and Sam. They would go on to open a second store in South Omaha in 1915. It was their store at this intersection that was likely destroyed in that fire.

Fast forward a few decades and Lucile Schaaf operated a gift shop called The Place from this corner which later became Tannenbaum. Lucile also operated a small sandwich shop called The T Room next door. As the owner of this building, it would become known as Lucile Schaaf’s Corner. Today it is home to not only Tannenbaum but also Old Market Candy, Dolci and Old Market Sundries.
