Some of the abandoned grain silos just north of Interstate 80 may finally be coming down! Built in 1952, I believe they stopped being used by 2000 if not earlier. In recent years, they have been a target for trespassers as well as graffiti and vandalism. Six kids were even stuck inside last year requiring assistance from the first responders. Attempts to make them more attractive to those walking or biking along the South Omaha Trail have resulted in murals being painted on them.

The silos closest to the interstate will remain while those closest to Vinton Street appear to be incorporated into the design and even utilized as part of a swimming pool. The upper portion of the silos that sit in between will be razed and replaced with two apartment buildings. A third apartment building and town houses will be built along 34th Street. The complex named The Silos and led by Lite Development and Leo A. Daly will have 225 apartment units and eight town homes. It will also include 244 off-street parking stalls.

A key feature is that it the South Omaha Trail connects to the Field Club Trail which extends north to Leavenworth Street near the Med Center campus. While I haven’t seen an update on it recently, there was a grant to build a bridge over Leavenworth Street so that the trail connects to a new trail to be constructed on campus.
