When I have time I enjoy looking through old pics in the Durham archive. I found this picture from 1900 and I am fascinated with it. It is looking southwest from 12th and Jackson Streets. Probably not surprising to most of you is that the vast majority of these buildings no longer stand.

The Hotel Barker is on the NE corner of 13th and Jones. It seems this must have been torn down to make way for the Fairmont Creamery building. Further down still is the Brady-McCord building at the SW corner of 13th and Leavenworth. At least a part of that building still stands and will soon be surrounded by a new park, Old Market Gardens. The building between those two is now a parking lot where the old Anheuser-Busch depot still standing. That building does not appear in the photo.

On the NW corner of 12th and Jones is the Omaha Paper Box Company which doesn’t appear to be standing and has been replaced with a building at 1120 Jones St in 1920.
The lot full of dirt and weeds in the lower left is 12th and Jackson and would be home to the current day Hollywood Candy building. A building was constructed on the right of the empty lot in 1915 and is now home to Cubby’s on 13th and Jackson.
Link to the Durham archives is in the comments for anybody else that might want to peruse the old photos.
I attempted to capture a comparison of the area from Google Earth. Enjoy. Until next time, keep exploring!
