Founded by Denny Lewis, Harlan Noddle and Murrary Newman, Spirit World was ahead of its time when it opened in 1974. Originally located at 74th and Pacific Street, the 7,200 sq ft store was more than twice the size of other liquor stores. It had the largest variety of wine, whiskey, beer and cheese in the state. After being out of commission for a few months due to damage caused by a tornado in 1975, it reopened with an even larger selection before.

As the store continued to grow, it moved to 7517 Pacific Street in 1983 (just to the south of where it had been located) and added a deli. By 2008 Denny Lewis was the sole owner and sold the business to Laurie Wolford. By 2014 she had decided to move the store to Aksarben Village in the space previously occupied by Wohlner’s grocery store. The new location at 6680 Center Street had 8,500 sq ft allowing for a kitchen, bar and party room. It was recognized as one of the best liquor stores by Omaha Magazine in 2024 and the best wine shop by The Reader in 2023.

After more than 50 years in business, Laurie announced that Spirit World would be closing its doors in early 2025. Sadly, another locally owned business leaves us – no doubt impacted by increased competition brought about by chain stores such as Wall to Wall Wine; Wine, Beer and Spirits; and Total Wine which opened nearby at 72nd and Pacific Street.
