The University of Nebraska Medical Center is building on-campus housing southeast of 39th and Dewey Ave. In order to build the complex, seven historic homes in the Gold Coast Historic District that were on the National Register of Historic Places were razed. The houses and apartment complex were built between 1902 and 1928 by some of Omaha’s most prominent architects.

The six story building is on the northeastern edge of its midtown campus. The 25,000 sq ft development will house 300 students in a combination of studio, one and two bedroom rental units. The modern-style apartments will replace the houses, duplexes and the older multi-unit building it current utilizes to provide housing for about 100 students. The Med Center has a long waiting list for student housing with around 4,500 students, residents, fellows and postdoctoral professionals at its campus. Amenities will include a grab-and-go diner and outdoor seating areas.

It is expected that the Med Center will build additional apartment units in order to attract and make life easier for its students, researchers and staff as it continues its rapid expansion. Also being considered is an apartment along the Field Club Trail south of Leavenworth Street and on its west campus off of Saddle Creek and Farnam.
