Looking through the Durham archives and came across this photo from 1945. It’s looking northwest from 14th and Douglas. In this picture from 79 years ago, we can Union Pacific in the background with Paris Bar and Cafe on the corner of 14th followed by Club Cafe, Town Theater, parking garage, Burlington Trailways, Harkert House, Belmont’s Credit and Jewelry, Douglas Smoke Shop, 20th Century Bowling and Tully’s (the old Rialto Theater). On the northwest corner of 15th and Douglas on the far left is the World Theater with Calandra Camera Company on the corner.

1945 Durham Museum photo with Douglas Street running from left to right (looking northwest). The street on the far right is 14th.
1945 Durham Museum photo from 15th and Douglas looking east.

For comparison, we can see that the entire block is now the home to Union Pacific’s Headquarters which was built in 2004. The parking garage that now stands in place of the World Theater was built in 1980 along with a skywalk that connects to the Central Park Plaza twin tower office complex and Park Fair Mall. The towers are being renovated into apartments while the old mall will be demolished and replaced with a parking garage that has apartments and a pool.

Current photo of 14th and Douglas St with the Union Pacific Center taking the entire block.

Until next time, keep exploring!
